Your Care Plan

Our Care Plan

Why is a Care Plan Important?

Our team is committed to you and are there to facilitate your recovery. It is important that you and the team are aware of the intended treatment and attendant time-course. This is where a care plan becomes handy. It ensures that we are all on the same page and can work in unison, thereby maximising the chance of success.

Ongoing Care

You will be cared for by our team of experienced health professionals, whose goal is to help you get the most out of your procedure.

You will have scheduled post-operative visits with Dr Mwaturura, your hand therapist or physiotherapist, as required.

No Extra Fees

The cost of surgical aftercare is included in the surgical fee.

Quality Guarantee

In the unlikely event that you need a problem corrected down the track, that is related to your treatment, you will not be charged additional surgeon or assistant fees.

Your Initial Consultation

A referral is required prior to consultation.

During your initial meeting, Dr Mwaturura will

  • ask detailed information about your symptoms and history of your current and past ailments
  • perform a thorough physical examination
  • review any x rays, diagnostic reports or other documents

To confirm your diagnosis, other investigations such as blood tests and imaging may be arranged.

Diagnosis

During your initial consultation, Dr Mwaturura will discuss your treatment options with you.

Your choices may include:

  • Watchful Waiting
  • Non-Surgical Approaches or
  • Surgery

It’s not uncommon to have questions or doubts. Dr Mwaturura encourages you to seek clarification on any issues before you leave the clinic.

Treatment Plan

Where surgery is the chosen path, Dr Mwaturura's aim is to provide you with the information required to make an informed decision.

Information will include:

  • Planning and Preparation
  • Benefits of the Procedure
  • Risks
  • Recovery and Outcomes

If you still have questions when you leave our rooms, please do not hesitate to contact us - we are here to help.

Details relating to costs, insurances and other logistics can be addressed by our staff.

Preparing for Surgery

As you prepare for your surgery, it is important to be proactive.

Mental Preparation

Before the surgery, you should make sure that you understand

  • what the surgery entails,
  • what to expect after surgery,
  • what role you play in your recovery

Surgery Preparation

Pre-op planning also involves

  • gathering information about costs (hospital fee, surgeon fee, assistant fee, anaesthetists fee, physiotherapy/hand therapy post-op appointments, when indicated)
  • preparing the home and having assistance (depending on the type of surgery)
  • preparing for success, bearing in mind that surgery comes with risks that, when they do occur, potentially compromise the eventual outcome

Day of Your Procedure

On the day of surgery, you will be asked not to eat or drink for six hours before your surgery if you are going to have a general anaesthetic. You can take your regular medicine with a glass of water, unless you were instructed otherwise.

Postoperative Hospital Recovery

Our team and hospital staff will work together to look after you.

Recovery At Home

To help you with your recovery, you will be given information on how to manage the next stage of your recovery. This includes:

  • What to Expect
  • Post-operative pain management
  • Movement and weight restrictions
  • The pivotal role of diligence with hand or physiotherapy
  • Follow-up Appointments
  • Contact Details

Please ask for clarification if you are unsure about something.

Rehabilitation Programme

When required, a tailored rehabilitation programme will begin soon after surgery.

Return to Work

Your return to work will be determined by a combination of the nature of your surgery, the requirements of your job and the progress of your recovery.
